Gainfully employeed, kind-of

I am now hired on a 2 month contract with via studio, a very well respected design/development/consulting company. This may turn into a long term position, but the 2 month contract period is a good trial run for them and for me. I’ll update as I have more information.

Today is my last day of work at Mercer. It has ended lack-luster (painfully), but the whole experience has been great for me. I have been able to add many skills and accomplishments to my resume, I made many good working connections, and have been treated pretty well, for the most part. Things are ending on as good a note as a layoff can, I suppose.

It’s cold as hell in Louisville today. 18 degrees. Making for a dreary greyhound ride back to Columbus this evening… I’m signing off now to go wait at the station.

looking for a job – web development / project managment

As you can see, I’m looking into my options for employment. I have a few leads, but would like to explore all of my options… at least all of the options I can get in quickly, as I’d like to have a choice made by late January.

Ideally, I’d like to find a position which afforded me the opportunity to manage, design, and develop web-based projects / solutions. Much of my focus has been on development and programming; I would like to stay on that side of things, though I’m also quite interested in user interface and graphic design.

over to Singapore

As one might so commonly read on IT employee blogs, “our team has been laid off”.

That’s right, the whole team is being outsourced to Singapore, effective Jan 31.

It will be a near-future disaster for the company, though it might encourage the abandonment of many applications and proceedures which I’ve been complaining about for years. But though on paper it looks like money saved, I suspect it will end up as more costly to keep things working/improving or a less expensive disaster where nothing works.

Either way, I’m out of it now. I have been “word of mouth” offered two other positions at Mercer which I will most definitely look into. I will also look at some other opportunities outside of the company.

It’s funny, I’ve turned down other opportunities which would have paid more and been more along the career lines I wanted, because my current position was more stable and more flexible. Well, flexibility hasn’t changed, but my impression about stability has been changed.

Luckily – I’m young, fairly experienced, we don’t have children yet, and I should be able to find something else… but it may be tricky to find a position which can be as flexible with location as we need while Anita is still in Pharmacy School in Columbus, OH (after which, we are still planning on moving back to Louisville, KY).

Anyway… I’m fine – Anita’s fine – things are fine. Updates as I get around to posting them…

Quick little update – greyhound to louisville

I’ve been very remiss at updating the blog here… I’ve had lots of good family time and some travels, some interesting stories and what-not.

but no… I’ve not been updating with anything important… and I’m apparently not going to start…  Here’s a very minor update:

I’m getting on a greyhound bus today from Columbus to Louisville.  Going to a few “in-the-office meetings” and also to help Karen and Bryan (Anita’s Mom & Stepfather) as they frantically get moved from their house in the suberbs to their Victorian house in Old Louisville.  I think the people who bought it said they have to be out by Feb.  Anita will drive to Louisville Thursday night (no classes nor work for her that Friday + weekend).
