In the world of hip-hop, there are rappers, and there are people who embrace a lifestyle that includes MCing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti artistry. NDPNDNT falls in the latter category.

A little more than a year old, the four-man group stems from a larger hip-hop collective called Soul Factory, which includes all of the above components. "We represent hip-hop (culture), so we try to bring as much of it to the stage as we can," says lyricist Boney B, a.k.a. Jason Bonza.

While many groups hinge their music on strong production, thoughtful lyrics or a catchy hook, NDPNDNT focuses on the entire package. "As a group, we take basic ideas and morals and passions, and every single song has a message to some extent," says Caotic, nee Danny Bell, 22, an MC/breakdancer.

"We don't do what you hear every day, but we talk about what you do every day," says Boney B, 28. Meanwhile, the group's production embodies "more of a Midwest flavor, where it's blended in with everything," he says.

NDPNDNT's music cuts a wide swath in the hip-hop genre. "We could take five songs off the album and murder a show, get on stage and just kill a crowd," Caotic says. "But at the same time, we could take five songs and do a completely underground set in a roughneck club and have everybody feel exactly what we're saying."

After Boney B's old group, HiKru, broke up, he and MC/producer E.T. (then a solo artist) started working together. "We came up with seven songs in two weeks, so it was a no-brainer," Boney B says.

The two officially formed NDPNDNT about 11/2 years ago. Caotic, who moved to Louisville from New Hampshire, joined the group about six months later. "The moment we heard his material, we had to have him," says E.T., a.k.a. Mike Logan, 25.

Machine (Scott Wallace, 30), the group's official b-boy/webmaster/hype man, came aboard a few months ago. "He was the final piece of the puzzle," E.T. says. Having a breakdancer "adds another element to the show. People have something to look at."

In one year, the foursome has made its mark on Louisville. It performed at the Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary party at Waterfront Park; opened shows for some of the industry's hottest touring rappers; released a CD, "The Next Testament"; and wrote the 2004 theme song — "Fire" — for the Louisville Fire arena football team.

In addition to performing at many venues around town, NDPNDNT also hosts a hip-hop night at Wick's Pizza, 975 Baxter Ave., every other Thursday. "We want to have a place people can come to if they want to hear good hip-hop music, see some breakdancing and hear some freestyling," says E.T. With their own DJs and b-boys in tow, "we try to represent a scene we wish we had growing up," Caotic says.
